Event Details

Na Píobairí Uilleann presents Notes & Narratives – a series of monthly performance-based lectures on traditional music, song and dance by some of Ireland’s finest traditional artists.

This month, Niamh Ní Charra explores the women who have contributed to Irish music over the last century or so. Her presentation will showcase both well-known and lesser-known musicians, while highlighting the gaps in the list and in our knowledge and will examine some of the complex reasons for these gaps.

Hailing from Killarney, County Kerry and strongly influenced by a wealth of local Sliabh Luachra musicians, Niamh is a multiple award winner on both fiddle and concertina. She has toured extensively as a soloist and with her own band as well as with various groups and shows including Riverdance and Carlos Núñez. In 2020, she released a 5th album “Donnelly’s Arm” which has received much critical and public acclaim.

Aside from her work as a performer, Niamh is a professional archivist and is currently project manager and project archivist for the Conradh na Gaeilge and Mary Robinson collections in the National University of Ireland, Galway. She is the Communications and Campaigns officer for the Archives and Records Association Ireland. She is a founding member and archivist for the volunteer campaign group FairPlé established in 2018, which aims to achieve gender balance in production, performance, promotion and development of Irish traditional and folk music. Niamh is also a co-host of the archives podcast series Archive Nation.

The talk will take place in 15 Henrietta Street, Dublin 1 and will start at 8:30pm on Thursday 21st April 2022. Admission is €10 (concession rate €5). Tickets are available through Eventbrite or contact the office at or by phone +353-1-8730093. For those unable to attend in person, it will also be live streamed for free through the NPU’s channel NPU-TV.
