Event Details

Uilleann piper, Louise Mulcahy, leads a special concert and presentation on the previously undervalued contribution of women to the piping tradition in Ireland.
Louise Mulcahy from Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick, made history in 2001 by winning four All-Ireland senior titles in one day at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Listowel. Louise won the championships in uilleann pipes, uilleann pipes (slow airs), flute and tin whistle. As well as recording with her family, she released a solo album, Tuning the Road, in 2014, she was voted female musician of the year at the Live Ireland Awards in 2017.
A keen researcher into the history of the pipes and pipers – especially of early women pipers – Louise recently presented the fruits of her labours in the excellent film documentary, Mná na bPíob, which was broadcast on TG4. She has also been invited by Na Píobairí Uilleann to become the custodian of a set of pipes previously owned by the late Liam O’Flynn and most, recently, she has become the latest recipient of the annual Liam O’Flynn Award, presented jointly by the National Concert Hall and the Arts Council of Ireland.
Louise will be joined by special guest pipers, Máire Ní Ghráda and Sorcha Ní Scolaí.
