Event Details

Drogheda Traditional Music and Singing Weekend presents an Afternoon of Discussion and Song – featuring John Moulden (pictured above) who will discuss the importance of local ballad maker, John Sheil, and his vast store of local and other songs, as well as their importance on the national stage. This will be followed by an open singing session featuring special guests, Maire Ní Chróinín and Gerry Cullen, along with a host of well known local and national singers.

John Sheil of Drogheda – “the best poet writing in English in Ireland before Yeats”

“Little” Sheil, Sheil the Poet has been a figure in Drogheda memory since his death in 1872, especially for singers. His songs have been pursued and prized, his books sought and perused, and his relationships within the ballad trade uncovered and examined. He has been the subject of book chapters and radio documentaries but, despite all this attention, his life, and much of his work, remains obscure.

John Moulden, known for his work on song traditions in both the oral and print spheres, has been interested in Sheil for many years. He will outline what he knows or guesses, but is convinced that others know more, and that much more can be discovered. Rather than giving a lecture he would like to organise a pooling of knowledge. Confident in his assertion that Sheil was a poet of national significance,  John hopes the afternoon will provide additional evidence, or else will impel the song lovers of Drogheda to get out and find it.

Máire Ní Chróinín is a singer and songwriter from Dublin with family roots in Kerry and in Belfast. She has been a member and weekly attendee of An Góilín since 1991 and has attended the Dublin-based Irish language festival of sean-nós singing and dance, Sean Nós Cois Life, every year since 1994. Máire initially got most of her sean nós songs through workshops held at successive Sean Nós Cois Life festivals. Her English language songs have come from a variety of sources, but many have come to her through the generosity of other Góilíners. She has guested at festivals and singing circles in Ireland, England, Scotland and Spain.

Gerry Cullen has been a stalwart of the unaccompanied traditional music scene locally and internationally for the past fifty years. He first came to national prominence as a member of the internationally acclaimed harmony trio, The Voice Squad, along with locals Fran McPhail and the late Brian Leahy. Gerry has also recorded with other international and local artists including Elvis Costello, Jimmy McCarthy, the late Seán Corcoran and Donal Maguire. Gerry has an enormous repertoire of local songs and is also well known for his singing of traditional Christmas songs, for which he travels extensively to deliver.
