Clare Sands is a sixth generation fiddler, multi-instrumentalist and bilingual singer. Due for release September 28, Clare’s upcoming self-titled album is a celebration of resilience, love and hope. It explores tradition, the sea, and the power of women through the dark and light, love and loss, and the rise and fall. Written and recorded over two years along the West coast of Ireland from Mizen to Malin, Clare found a path where the Irish and English languages, Irish traditional, folk, and contemporary music meet. Pulsating rhythms, traditional melodies and bilingual song are interwoven with spoken word guests, Manchán Magan, Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, Fiachna Ó Braonáin and Tommy Sands, and musical guests Aisling Urwin.
As a live performer, Clare has played at Celtic Connections in Glasgow, Glastonbury Festival, the International Folk Alliance Convention in the US and the Irish Arts Center in New York – with an electrifying combination of fiddle, guitar, percussion, live electronics and vocals. She has collaborated with a range of performers including Hothouse Flowers, Kíla, Imelda May and Mary Coughlan. During 2021 she developed a unique project Tírdhreacha agus Fuaimdhreacha in collaboration with Susan O’Neill, Steve Cooney, Tommy Sands, Brídín and Liam Ó Maonlaí.
