Event Details

Everyone with an interest in traditional singing (in any language) is welcome! Just come along and enjoy the singing, and of course the company, and maybe you might like to sing a traditional song yourself. You are more than welcome! Tá míle fáilte romhat! We would especially welcome more new singers, more women singers, more younger singers agus ar ndóigh fáilte speisialta roimh Ghaeilge!

Special guest for this evening is Cork’s own Jimmy Crowley. After thirteen albums, and a lifetime spent singing and collecting the songs of his native city and county, Jimmy Crowley has reached a crossroads. The likes of Johnny Jump Up, The Boys of Fair Hill and Salonika may have been his bread and butter since his 1977 album with Stokers Lodge. But, with his most recent 27-track album, he asserts he has come to the end of the road in terms of recording further ‘Songs from the Beautiful City’.

“It’s probably going to be my last Cork album,” he says of the double CD, drawn from his 2014 compendium of material collected and researched over decades, Songs from the Beautiful City: The Cork Urban Ballads, published by his own Free State Press.

The album was supposed to have been showcased in An Góilín in 2020 but Covid-19 intervened. So after a two-year delay,  Jimmy will finally present it at this session.
